What Is Sleep Debt and How Do We Get Rid of It?

Sleep debt occurs when there is a discrepancy between the amount of sleep we need and the amount we get. This can lead to impaired cognitive function, irritability, and increased risk of accidents. Over time, chronic sleep debt may contribute to severe health issues such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.

Managing Sleep Debt:
  • Napping: A short nap of 15-30 minutes can help mitigate the effects of sleep deprivation by boosting alertness and performance. However, longer naps can lead to sleep inertia, leaving you groggier than before.
  • Consistent Sleep Schedule: Align your sleep routine to ensure you get 7-9 hours of sleep per night, as recommended for most adults.
  • Weekend Sleep: While tempting, sleeping in for more than an hour past your usual wake-up time can disrupt your sleep pattern. Try to keep weekend wake-up times within an hour of your weekday schedule.
Ultimately, the best way to eliminate sleep debt is by consistently getting adequate sleep each night, rather than relying on weekend catchups or extensive napping.

However, those stains are typically caused by perspiration (with the average person losing about a litre of water each night), skin flakes, and everyday spills. These not only feed dust mites but also contribute to the growth of mould and bacteria.
