Recognising Dementia Awareness Month

September marks Dementia Awareness Month, an initiative led by Alzheimer Australia and supported by the Australian Government. Despite its widespread impact, many Australians have only a basic understanding of dementia, which encompasses a variety of symptoms leading to a decline in cognitive abilities including memory, physical function, social skills, and rational thinking.

Dementia describes the symptoms of numerous conditions that cause a progressive impairment of a person's cognitive functioning. Here are some critical statistics from Alzheimer Australia's Dementia Awareness Month Media and Communications Toolkit:
  • Over 413,000 Australians live with dementia, with a higher prevalence among women than men.
  • Three in ten individuals over 85 and almost one in ten over 65 are affected by dementia.
  • Younger onset dementia currently affects approximately 25,938 Australians, with numbers projected to increase significantly in the coming decades.
  • Dementia is the second leading cause of death in Australia and the primary cause of disability among older Australians.
In 2017, dementia-related costs in Australia were estimated at $14.67 billion. It's essential to remember that if you or someone you care for is affected by dementia, support is available. Alzheimer Australia provides vital resources, support, and advice and can be contacted at 1800 100 500.

However, those stains are typically caused by perspiration (with the average person losing about a litre of water each night), skin flakes, and everyday spills. These not only feed dust mites but also contribute to the growth of mould and bacteria.
